Mind over body. © by Gina Rydland As a woman I often wished that science had come far enough to free me from my monthly menstruation. I want to live my life to the fullest without the bleeding, pain and mood swings. I also want to be free from the fear of becoming pregnant. It is a huge responsibility to bring a child into this world, and personally I do not want nature to decide for me. Many girls can not use the out of date contraceptives available today. They are just not good enough! And I think we always should strive for better solutions. I dream of being able to shut my menstruation cycles on and off, at will. So I can decide myself if my body will be able to get pregnant or not. I also wish for the cycles to be more human and not full of painful bi effects as mentioned above. To do this a reengineering of the human genetic structure is needed. Some might argue that reprogramming our brain and body is not possible, and some might even think it is immoral. In my opinion such thoughts belong to the past. A new era has begun and new technologies and science will make us able to redesign ourselves and the environment around us, in ways we only could dream of before. A door leading to a whole new world of possibilities has been opened. It is up to us to use this new knowledge wisely. Our body and brain and our surroundings consists of «building blocks» that can be decoded, taken apart, rebuilt and changed. Knowledge of how to reengineer our DNA and it`s properties will make us able to redesign ourselves in any way we like. When it comes to the moral issues, I ask, is it immoral to create a better life for ourselves, to have more control over our own body and lives? We are after all born with the intelligence to develop into better versions of ourselves. Should we not use this ability, should we just decide for status Q? I believe that moving on, development and changes are necessary for us to survive as a specie. I think that a lot of the resistance against human enhancement lies in fear of the unknown, fear of loosing ones religion. Here comes something new and improved that could change the world as we know it forever. And some people will be scared of new knowledge that might change their daily life and the reality they are familiar with. Personally I would love to have the ability inside my genetic structure to decide over my own body just through thought. In the early days many people died of diseases that we now are able to cure or live with. The death-rate for children was probably very high compared with what it is today. So in the old times being able to get pregnant once a month was very important. But today, our chances for survival are better, and we live much longer. We do not have the same need for giving birth to as many children as before. With the emerging technologies that can cure diseases and repair damage caused by the process of aging, the human survival rate will get even better. At one point we might get so far that we can stop the process of aging and live forever, if we want to. I do not need to, or want to menstruate or get pregnant. On top of it all it is painful. So I hope that science will come up with a good solution to this problem that actually works! I want my life to be better! |
